Must be the same time when I first heard it. I wasn't into Led Zeppelin before and a school mate introduced me to the song.

Yeah, you know, we were talking about first remembered songs. That's certainly the Beatles. Not just Penny Lane but Yellow Submarine too, which I used to bawl at the top of my lungs without knowing the first thing about the lyrics. But being into music starts about the same time as in your case. In my memory Mark Bolen features very prominently on the radio of the early 70ies.

Don't judge, it came out 2 years before I was born, but for some reason it was still played on German radio more than half a decade later from time to time. I remember wondering as a kid what oblucheensn meant, and for that reason it's the earliest one I can actually still identify.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Yeah, when I was eleven -- this was 76 or 77 -- a buddy had the Beatles' 67-70 compilation. Now there's a primer for good rock!

This is uncanny. I hadn't seen your entry when I posted mine. I think they simply played it to death back then...

Other strong contenders are

- I am, after all, essentially a child of the 80s, and I was 5 when it came out and I remember hearing it, making it a plausible candidate -

and this older number, which was simply played very frequently during any summer
