No, lesson not learned. Lesson learned would be if it had any positive effect on society or the next guy going on a killing spree. But that doesn't happen as every available statistic - ever - shows.

I was being facetious. Dodgy

Here's something I don't understand. If we have state sanctioned killing for people who have killed, why don't we have state sanctioned rape for people who have raped? I mean, really. What's the difference?
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Let the right rise to a one party state that could happen.

In some parts of the world they do do that, mob rule for most crimes, but also not parts of the world any compassionate person would want to live in.

How about no death penalty? We are one of the few western industrialized nations that still has it.

Because I have healed from being raped. I have healed and moved on. You can't really heal from death. Those killed don't get their life back. They don't even get the chance to try to be a better person, they don't get letters from loved ones, they don't get to go to a library and read, they don't get to buy noodles from the commissary, they don't get to see the fame they have created for themselves. If the victim can't move on then the one doing the damage shouldn't either.

I agree, Brian. I'm just pointing out the ridiculousness of the DP and the fact that we don't use the same logic in any other circumstance. Except killing.

Ok, so the rapist can also be healed from being raped.

(btw, I am so sorry that that happened to you. That is truly awful.  Sad )

Do you think it's good to base a justice system on an emotion-based "eye for an eye" type of deal?

I remember when this happened. He walked into a church during a prayer meeting with the determination to murder black people. What made this even worse was the fact that they happily welcomed him to join them. He murdered them in cold blood and without remorse. At his trial he still showed no remorse. I think the death penalty for him was just.

No. It's not about a lesson learned. It's about the penalty. A life for a life for a remorseless murderer.

Let's see, I'm for the death penalty so yes. I think I have already made it very clear that when it comes to cold blooded murder I don't think anything short of death is acceptable. For anything less than murder no. I'm not saying rape those that rape or torture someone that tortures animals. This is only about intentional murder.

No that's not what I said. If it sounded like that I apologize for not wording it correctly. As long as the victim can move on with their life then jail is sufficient. If the victim can have a chance at a life then the attacker/rapist/etc should have a chance at moving past what they did. If their victim's life was stopped I honestly don't understand how anyone can accept the person that did the killing could continue theirs.

Why should murderers be killed themselves?  What purpose does it serve other than making an emotional, vengeful point?  I wouldn't want to live in a system that bases it's law on emotion and revenge.

That's not even considering the facts that the death penalty does not work as a deterrent, has the possibility of executing innocent people, is a horrible violation of human rights, is slow, inefficient, and expensive, and that we are the only western developed nation to still use it.
