I just had a class on Weimar Germany and my teacher was just last night talking about the rise in infamy of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party (right on up to his prison stay/writer's retreat in 1923) and did a short spiel on why Hitler added the "National Socialist" to the party's name, and he explained that, in essence, Hitler used the term "socialist" in a very peculiar sense; namely, his belief in "National Socialism" referred to his belief in creating a "national German society." So, in this case, it is probably better called Pan-Germanism.

That said, there was a branch of Naziism that could be legitimately considered socialists: The Strasserites. That said, they got butchered on the Night of the Long Knives in 1934.

Odd isn't it how the original words "liberal" and "conservative" came to be chosen to represent these two .. tendencie?

To my mind the word "liberal" is unabashedly positive in its original sense. Who wouldn't want to be open to hearing all the ideas and in favor of tolerance? But then excessive tolerance becomes permissiveness in some people's minds. And openness to hearing all the ideas butts up against the value of loyalty on the other side.

"Convservative" in the sense of prudence and preserving are positive but in excess become censorship and inflexibility. To my liberal mind set conservatives exalt in the status quo whiich favors them so well and have too little concern for real opportunity of upward mobility. They would rather argue that fate proves merit rather than allow for genuine advancement based on merit.

In the past the liberal democrats were the party beset by crazy extremists. Now the tables have been reversed. It seems the republicans actually require a huge field of candidates for the primaries just so that there may be one or two not yet debunked in the press by the time of the election.

ME? I understand the reason for the wars (US self interest, period) and really don't care,except when they start sending Aussie boys home in coffins. THEN I'm livid.

However, I'm neither a liberal nor a conservative,I'm a pluralist. IE a pragmatist rather than an ideologue or a moralist.

Hitler was a fascist. Mussolini, founder of fascism,was his role model.

I kind of cocked my head at it a little myself, but it does make sense when you think of it. Fascism is the "third way" claiming to be neither left of right. Totalitarian on the social spectrum, and somewhat moderate on the economic spectrum, only certain races of citizens received their "socialism", all others were refused. Being a meritocracy one could move up the ladder in society, but usually only through the millitary complex, that was so intertwined with corporations that it was very difficult to tell the two apart from another....When i think of fascism, I typically break it down to "millitary rule". Millitary is pretty much in charge of everything economic and social, with one supreme dictator at its helm.

No, that site concludes that JFK was a conservative. Remember, they cannot sum up their failures, so everything that is successful is usually "conservative". Teddy Roosevelt was a conservative when he was in office, but instantly became a "progressive socialist" when he left it. They also try to find a way to label every single serial killer and murderer as a liberal and atheist as well.
