The first time you heard "Third and a mile"?
September 10, 2021 at 5:17 pm
I don't know who originally coined the term, but I do know Sonny/Sam and Frank were the long time radio announcers for the Washington NFL team.
"Third and a mile" they would use on 3 down and billions of miles to get a first down. I loved them growing up. Living in the DC viewing area, I would mute the audio on the TV and listen to their radio call.
Sonny/Sam and Frank would not cut Washington slack, If we played well, they'd say so. If we blew a play or game, they would be like your family member telling you not to fart at the Thanksgiving table.
In all honesty, I find most sports play announcers boring and too analytical. Sonny/Sam and Frank are/were hands down, to me, to this day, the best sports announcers of all time.

You should see a neurologist.

To be somewhat fair, a "mile" in today's NFL isn't a stretch since the game has become mostly passing. Back in my youth the standard play call was run on first and second, then play option on 3rd. Back then though, if you got a severe penalty that put you at say, 3rd and 12 or 3rd and 15 that was death or a decision of punting.
Point being Sonny/Sam and Frank were not only play callers, they were comedy either way.

My head flipped the two and went to racing or alcohol.
(37 safety zone activated)
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

Flag on the post, roughing the poster. Half the distance to the punch line.
