I imagine you are an American and so are brought up to be overly fearful, it seems to be a crude means of control.
The truth is you have been told "over there be scary monsters" so act as you are supposed to.
The truth is Islam is not as big a problem over here as you imagine, it isn't not a problem, but it has been over egged by the media who want to tell a particular story.
