Keep in mind that Huckabee is the guy who thought building concentration camps for HIV+ persons was a good idea, such a good idea that he "stood by his comments" when asked about the original statement, during his 2008 campaign. He also still thinks being gay should be a crime, and that we should execute drug dealers.
Prisons typically "allow" (read: force) prisoners to work for pennies per hour, literally (or as much as $1/hr, for "top" jobs), and almost all of it goes to paying off "debts" they incur as a result of their own prosecution, incarceration, and/or parole/probation fees. They are used as slave labor to run the prison itself, in jobs like grounds maintenance (at once camp, we had to push manual reel mowers to cut acres of grass every day), the kitchen, the laundry, and "food service". There are also Prison Industries jobs, where they make products that are sold to, or on behalf of, the State; this trend is increasing, as they quickly realize the profitability of it.
In some states, Missouri included, they are being charged as much as $100/day for the "privilege" of being held in jail, awaiting trial, meaning that innocent people who insist on fighting their cases are under tremendous pressure to accept a false plea-bargain, as they watch their debts skyrocket, awaiting a trial that never seems to come. I met guys whose unscrupulous prosecutors agreed to "waive the fee" if they pled guilty... the fee they incurred for waiting to go to trial, mind you.
Add to all that, there is what is called a "Victim's Compensation Fund" fee, which goes to the State whether or not your crime had a victim at all, and "Restitution", a fine assessed by the judge if there are damages asserted by the victim-- often at extraordinarily-inflated rates, because there's no standard of proof in that courtroom for claims made during the sentencing phase.
Inmates are already put into crushing debt that pretty much guarantees they have no alternative but to turn to crime, upon release, if they intend to eat and sleep under a roof. Guys like Huckabee are the reason states like Missouri and Arkansas (on whose borders I live) are the way they are... models of international scorn and derision. And he wants to make it worse!

A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost
I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.
