If I got married, my would-be husband would have to have a pretty kick-ass last name for me to change mine. Mine is unique enough that in every instance of coming across someone with my last name I have discovered that we are related with a common ancestor only about three generations back (my great-gandparents' generation).
Can't say for certain that this is true for everyone in the US/world with my last name (it might be a way more common name in Germany/The Netherlands than here) but it's held true so far...
Plus, if I changed my name it would die out in my branch of the family tree: My dad's grandparents had three daughters and one son, and the only son had only daughters (of which I am one).
