This is a great point. What would happen if we prayed to a clay pot? Well, one of three things would happen....
1) What you pray for happens almost immediately. Then you can say, "The clay pot heard my prayer and answered it!".
2) What you pray for happens, but it takes awhile (weeks, months, years, even decades!). Then you say, "The clay pot heard my prayer and granted my request when it felt I was ready!".
3) Nothing happens. Ever. Then you say, "The clay pot heard my prayer but the answer was no".
Substitute "God" for "clay pot" and you have the same thing.
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.
