It makes no matter. Diplomacy, among other things, is about readily granting insignificant wishes to a lesser party, not about forcibly disabusing them of their entitlement to keep up appearances, especially not after repeatedly laying waste to their self-esteem.
I often find myself having to go to great lengths to achieve certain compromises. Not as often feeling the need to explain them, granted, for that endangers the feasibility of the objective to begin with, but one has to negotiate with one self as well, from time to time.
