Okay, I'm a citizen of the US and an observer of the same, based on bachelors in Psych and Soc, and a Masters in History. The gun culture/counter culture here is heavily news-worthy, so it gets air time "at home and abroad". The mundane doesn't get reported, doesn't sell condoms and Viagra you know.
For the average person guns have little or no impact. The bunker mentality of the ardent/paranoid gunner is the except to the rule, not the norm. If you live here you'll hardly notice guns. We get news of morons leaving guns out for kids to kill themselves with, and the NRA is always preaching the gospel according to Annie Oakley. The vast bulk of Americans own zero to one guns, and if they own them they keep them put away safely. The NRA would have the US, and thus the world, believe that we need everything up to and including nuclear weapons to justify their salaries and "bonuses from concerned gunmakers citizens."
A smart consumer of news, especially US news, takes anything that sounds apocalyptic with a Prius-sized grain of salt.
