Ask an ex-mormon nerd

You may not be old enough to remember when it happened   (I remember it being on the news back then, I didn't get the backstory till a couple years ago) and can imagine announced revelations that occur when you're an adult carry a little more wallop than the ones you just read about.  But did you ever hear any discussion of that revelation, or why it was different from the others ??

BTW, have you ever sought out the racial stuff in the church publications?

Would you mind if I did a thread on it, it is really quite amazing some of the stuff Brigham Young said in sermons about blacks (they wrote them down, YEA !! Go Mormon compulsion to record stuff that they probably shouldn't have) and other items recorded in the Book of Mormon and other church publications.

That would be encompassed in the Official Declaration 2 of the church. You might find it interesting to find it on lds.org to read the letter that President Kimball gave concerning the matter. But by word of mouth by the church it states on the website like wise:

"To Whom It May Concern:
On September 30, 1978, at the 148th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the following was presented by President N. Eldon Tanner, First Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church:
In early June of this year, the First Presidency announced that a revelation had been received by President Spencer W. Kimball extending priesthood and temple blessings to all worthy male members of the Church. President Kimball has asked that I advise the conference that after he had received this revelation, which came to him after extended meditation and prayer in the sacred rooms of the holy temple, he presented it to his counselors, who accepted it and approved it. It was then presented to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who unanimously approved it, and was subsequently presented to all other General Authorities, who likewise approved it unanimously."

And then the letter, which is also considered modern day scripture and is included along with the bible and book of mormon, is stated following this excert. I was born about a decade and a half later so I am not very aware of the state of the church at the time, including probable social pressures. To the second question, I had at one point reviewed some of Brigham's teachings from the Book of Discourses which does document a lot of his racial ideology, especially concerning marriage. But this book has not been used in Church doctrine in who knows how long. And yes, please do a thread, I would really like to learn more.
