It was the first election where social media played a major role. Yes, the internet has been around, but in the Bush years, for example, Facebook was nothing but a bad dream. Now virtually everyone is on social media and - due to the business model - gets presented with tailormade (fake) news.
It isn't an American phenomenon, by the way. It's global. We recently had an election where a Trump like figure ran against an establishment candidate. The internet outrage was pretty similar.
