Looking back, now, we can see that it’s proponents were plainly and clearly wrong. This is one of the many benefits of hindsight. Thing is, we have access to tools and data they didn’t, and it’s easy to see why they thought what they did, then.
There were, ofc, people who had insisted it was wrong before it was superseded.
Newtons gravitational theory was wrong and replaced by Einstein and the general theory of relativity.
But Newtons equations work well at some levels and are still used.
Of those who plunged 10 stories, there are far fewer who would accuse Newton of being wrong than there are atheists in foxholes.
The lesson is Newton is right enough to be extremely useful in large variety of ways, while creationism is wrong enough to be totally useless in all ways other than aggrandizing the religion from whose loins it sprung. In so far as Newton's theory left a gap, it can demonstrably be filled by what is not god. Creationism is one giant gap which even omniscience and omnipotence can only pretend to fill only by the idiot acclamation of the braindead.
