Democrats, republicans, and libertarians are all agreed on liberal economics defined as free markets and no socialism. They disagree only on the finer points of practice in that context. In that libertarians want to tear down protections against discrimination, they are not liberal in the only sense that differentiates between the three. Thus the paradox of libertarianism and an explanation for it's amusing history in american politics. Originally envisioned as a party of social liberals who prefered conservative economics - it became home to the dregs of white nationalists and republican electioneering schemes.
