Denial of Service Attack
#20
RE: Denial of Service Attack
Why are so many IT guys total idiots when it comes to IT? Are they just good at BS'ing their way into the job? The IT guy for our city was pretty much a total moron. Once he was running around in a panic checking all the computers in the building claiming that there were a lot of them which were infected with a virus. This was back when we were running Windows 95 & 98. Apparently Windows 95 had a file named "taskman.exe" while Windows 98 had a file named "taskmon.exe." Or, it could have been the other way around, I don't remember exactly. Anyway, these are normal Windows files found in these operating systems. Well, he apparenly misread some information about a virus which affects the taskman.exe file, because he thought that the virus puts a file by that name in the Windows directory. So he went around to all computers searching the hard drive for taskman.exe, and every time he found it he claimed that computer was infected. Remember, this is a normal Windows file. So every computer that still had Windows 95 on it he thought was infected (or if it's the other way around, every computer with Windows 98), and he was having those computers shut off in the whole building. After a while someone finally realized there were no viruses on the computers he thought were infected, and he claimed that McAfee put out some bad information about that particular virus. More likely, he just didn't understand what he read.

Then there was another time one of our computers at the main dispatch console had some software loaded onto it, I don't remember exactly what it was but I think it had something to do with remotely controlling the computer or having the ability to lock it down. He was pissed off because he claimed that he didn't load that software on that particular computer, but one of us had to have taken the key, gone upstairs to his office (from a position that had to be manned 24 hours a day), found the box with the software in it, brought the disk downstairs, loaded the program onto the computer, left the position again to go back upstairs and put the disk back in the box, and lock his office again. And all for what? To put a program which we didn't know anything about onto a computer?

I could almost tolerate his stupidity, but I don't understand why his supervisors did. It was just kind of a running joke about how he seemed to not know squat about computer technology.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.
