Of all the GFA signatories, he was the least active in making sure it happened. All the credit goes to John Major and Tony Blair, John Hume and Seamus Mallon, John Bruton and Bertie Ahearn, George Mitchell and Bill Clinton and finally Gerrry Adams and Martin McGuinness for finally ending the PIRA's campaign of murder and bringing them to the peace table.
Good assessment. There’s precious little double that, if left to his own devices, Trimble would have gutted the GFA to the point of toothlessness. It was largely Hume and McGuinness (and not inconsiderable pressure from the Americans) that kept him from doing so.

Blair and Major helped in a massive way. If I recall correctly it was only the promise that the six counties would be ruled by an Irish British condominium that brought Trimble and the other protestant supremacists in the UUP to the table.
Oh and one more person I forgot to give praise to last post, Mo Mowlam the true driver of the peace process within Labour. Without her it wouldn't have happened and with her gone successive English governments reverted to appeasing the protestant supremacists, by now the NSDUP.
