I think it's a nod to the controversy over People-First language and Disability-first language; At the worst, it's like: Should we reduce this person's entire being to this one particular characteristic, or should we just treat it like some incidental detail that can be ignored (or something that just happened to them)? In my case, as you could have probably divined from my negative phrasing of both options, I don't particularly care either way. I guess for me, it'd depend on the situation and how relevant my autism is to it.
