It happens all the time. Example: America.
The 'pilgrim fathers' didn't come to America because they were persecuted (how could they be? Living as they were in the most religiously tolerant country of the era). That persecution crock was their concocted history! In reality, quite contrary, they came to America with the specific intention to persecute religious dissidents. And they did! Remember the Salem witch hunts?

If you have another couple centuries pay attention to how American history evolves. Before this millennium is out the Pilgrim Fathers will have been turned into prophets, patriarchs, and angels (while in reality they were a nasty bunch of murderous, witch burning intolerant assholes).

The Jews consider themselves 'different', 'special', 'the apple of God's eye', and have in reality turned into bona fide fascists.
The Americans consider themselves 'different', 'special', 'the greatest nation on earth under God', and have in reality turned into bona fide fascists.
Both run ghettos and illegal concentration camps for their 'undesirables', which they want to get rid of (read: kill).

That's why they are such big pals. Have a 'special relationship'. They have a lot in common: piles of bullshit and nasty, murderous assholes. And they have the same to lose: face.
