so this 'good idea' is setting people up to fail so the preacher can say 'you are all sinners' in the confident knowledge that there is no way they can't be.

You're close. Jesus is telling us to look at ourselves instead of judging others, as I said before. Nobody can be called righteous by this standard, and yet the standard is perfectly valid. Who says it isn't? You? Then you are merely judging God. So we can read it and weep, and all stop pretending- atheist, fundy and Pharisee alike.
