Inquisition anyone? Most countries have reduced the power of their respective religions within the government. Our country (USA) was founded by persons fresh from the Inquisition, ergo the 1st amendment.
Is there anything to really stop them? NO, but it has made it difficult to gain direct power, though the influence on laws is pervasive.
It would appear that Saudi Arabia has allowed significant influence from their religion and we see the result of that today. The new 'Inquisition"?
