Anyway, there's an important difference between the things you mentioned, which are lifestyle choices, and much of the pollution that is put out by big business, which affects me but over which I have no choice. For example, I choose to live in the Seoul area, which I know is polluted, because of the economic opportunities available to me here. However, I do not choose to have fish stocks destroyed by greedy fisheries, rainforests cleared by farmers on the behalf of big food industries, or giant holes dug in delicate ecosystems because oil companies can parade a long list of hired "scientists" who are willing to lie about the results.
On the other hand, I agree that education is important. I recently moved into a building close to a high-voltage power line. It was only after hours of research that I discovered there was no good science supporting a link to cancer, and was willing to move in. The Republican oil-drillers aren't necessarily the only liars out there.
Hmmm. There's the rub. The impotence of your average punter against the very thing that sustains him/ her. The opportunities of big business.
I am not disputing that an higher ethical ideal is required in business nor that the the attraction of the "fast monetary gain" should not be called into question
