I remember how, especially in the 80s, one of the most popular genre of movies involved the designated 'good guy', frequently a cop, turning to vigilante methods to 'fight crime', typically racking up a body count in the dozens of small-time hoods, and how not only was it not a problem that our heroes were cold-blooded mass murderers, it was the willingness to dehumanize 'criminals', to portray even petty crooks as just something to shoot at, that made our heroes heroic. We were fed the idea that even the slightest violation of the law meant that a person deserved to be blasted without a trial.
