Because if god is working on the time scale that science suggests then he/she/it

God is not a person, an organism, so we cannot imagine what he thinks, just like, as you said, bacteria cannot understand what we think. He created us, that is why he cares about us, just like you would care about anything that you created. It is not for no reason that he is called "our Father".
