The problem is it is no longer common for students to wish to learn it when schools offer to teach it in this country.
Sad, but true. 24 years ago I graduated from high school in a class of almost 1,000; only 40 of us took calculus. The problem isn't new.
Neither of my kids have ever taken a calculus course. In fact, my son opted to study to be a diesel mechanic instead of a mechanical engineer to avoid calculus (his words, not mine). I love my son and he's doing fine, but I doubt I will ever understand his academic laziness.
