Theres really a very simple explanation.
Like many other creatures, the nautilus grows in all directions at once. This means that even as it gets bigger, its shape doesn't change.
So what it needs is a shell that curves in such a way as to preserve the shape of the interior cavity. It turns out that the kind of curve that does this is a logarithmic spiral. Thus there is strong evolutionary pressure for nautiloid shells to take the form of logarithmic spirals.
