In 2000 I was living in New York when Hillary Clinton decided to run for the Senate. Her presumed opponent, Rudy Giuliani got cold feet and dropped out of the race which left the Republicans scrambling to find a replacement. They came up with a congressman from NYs 2d district, Rick Lazio. The 2d was as reliable a republican district as you could find. The only time a Democrat won was in the aftermath of Watergate.
Anyway, this left the GOP with an open seat and they decided to get cute. The recruited some black woman to run on the Republican line for Congress secure in the knowledge that republicans would do what they were told, as usual.
She got trounced and a solidly GOP district went to the Dems.
