Your first guess is right so far...
I like a lot of early Southern (Falkner, Flanery O'Connor, Twain) and British lit , so dusky was no problem. But if there's a rhyming synonym for round or fat, I don't know it. Someone else will have to finish it for me. I only get silliness like:
