Sorry, not trying to be difficult, as I share your skepticism, but any time someone says to me "If X then necessarily Y", my brain is immediately challenged to come up with alternatives. It only took a split-second to respond with "...unless of course we can't." Consciousness doesn't presuppose the ability to communicate.
