The equivalent size dog (to replace one of my cats) is usually surly, scared, yappy, extremely dumb paired with the usual dog "neediness". I hate small dogs.
Foot print and requirements-wise, cats meet mine perfectly.
A dog won't.
And I will not put a larger dog through 10 hours of isolation a day.
Cats can take it, Dogs won't.
Separation anxiety is a bitch.
Can't argue with the above. I dislike smaller breeds for the same reasons, and larger dogs fit my lifestyle. Your point about separation anxiety is quite valid - dogs need companionship, even another dog. They're more of a comittment than a cat, to be sure. I'd be happy to take a dog with me wherever I went.
