In the UK, they don't need it, they only need heaters.
Where I live, it's hot and humid and there is often little or no breeze on your average summer day. It's really nasty outside right now and it's only just after nine o'clock.
I like to hold the conceit that I'm enlightened on some matters and I have been doing things to make my little life less of a burden on the planet, but giving up AC in the summer isn't one of the concessions I'm willing to make as long as I'm living in the south.
And what I see done in most homes in Portugal.
If you can't do that in there, then AC does seem like a must. Just think of your future generations and try to keep it in decent levels. I guess you can be comfortable indoors at a nice temperature of 25ºC (~77F), during the Summer and 18ºC (~65F) in the Winter, right?

Not for the most part, no.
