Because easy access is not the reason for suicide, merely the means. The U.S. has a fairly low suicide rate compared with most of Europe:
11 per 100,000 in 2002, just a tad below Canada. The global average is 16 per 100,000. The U.K. is down at 7, but France weighs in at 18, and Finland at 20.3.
