A friend was telling me that I should aim to teach in China, rather than Japan. He has a point, but I'll start with Japan. I'd love to live in Hokkaido, but the bulk of teaching jobs are in the big cities, so I'll no doubt have to start there.
I'd say to go for it. It's a hell of an experience to be able to go overseas and support yourself with teaching. I'm looking to start my own business out here soon and get out of teaching just because of the negative social stigma that it's catching, but it's an easy job. China is incredibly cheap and beautiful. I don't know how costly the rest of Japan is but I've heard that Tokyo is ridiculously expensive. I'd suggest China just because of the proximity to so many other cities, the beautiful geography, and the great cities but Japan has those as well. I'd love to be able to visit Japan in the future.
