When my husband was a toddler, he spoke German to his mother and grandmother. Unfortunately he has forgotten how to speak the language but when he hears German he can still pick out several words or phrases.
Did they have to flee?
My parents and grandparents emigrated to Hungary when Hitler came. My parents met there and got married in 1945. They briefly considered moving to the states when all was over. I'm glad they didn't, since my older brother would have been the right age for Vietnam. Still, I've got an elderly aunt living in America. No longer in the USA, since after she retired, she moved to Canada because of the social system.
His grandparents sent their ten year old daughter to the UK and fled with their infant daughter, my future MIL. Luckily, they had a sponsor in the US.
I think that my husband's aunt was part of the kindertransport
