Perhaps you were also hoping that they'd make it easier on you if you made a concession. Since they've decided to go on the attack, you can simply put the burden of proof on them, but I suspect that won't go any better. My advice-- don't worry yourself about how they will feel about it; either they'll realize that you're more important to them than their religious beliefs, or they won't.
It sounds as if they want this to be your problem. Let it be their problem. Tell them you're going to shake the dust off of your sandals before you leave.
