Probably because Gentlemen's club sounds more appealing to the general audience than wanker's paradise. Although I'd love to see something like that in large illuminated letters advertised for everyone to see.

I was unclear. We called ourselves an "adult shop", not a "gentleman's club", because we rented movies and sold sex toys, but didn't feature live performers. Every so often, the occasional starlet would come through on her tour, signing Polaroids for five bucks a pop, but mostly it was people in the neighborhood businesses on their lunch breaks or days off who asked you to say nothing about them being there.

We weren't shy about our identification. But in America, "wanking" is a bit off-color, and bound to lose you business from the Christians who don't want to confess being Onanists -- or be seen patronizing shops selling their favorite porns.
