I'm a fiscal conservative & a political pragmatist. I identify with what works (as best I or anyone can at least), not necessarily with any side of the spectrum (I guess I'd side more right than left, though). Ultimately though I'm egalitarian.
It's odd because obviously what we in Europe would define as 'socialist' is actually far left of what those in the US would deem to be 'socialist' (I presume). Any hint of state intervention in the US does appear to get a backlash from anyone even moderately conservative. I guess that's partially a symptom of federalism mixed with a general distrust of 'the man'? I dunno, my knowledge of American politics doesn't really extend that far.
I'm generally in support of welfarism for example, but not at 'any' cost, and certainly not when the benefits start to be overtaken by the losses. But hey, that's another thread I guess.
