I have to give Bruch another listen then!
So, basically as opposed to baroque and romanticism. There's also the more colloquial use basically referring to "western art music". In German we have the old distinction between E- and U-Music (E=earnest, U=Unterhaltung, i.eentertainment.)
These categories were hotly debated and are often not well-defined any more.
