I honestly have never needed police and probably never will. I would call the police as a last resort if it meant saving someone in my family... That's about it. Besides that, if you try to hurt me, good luck to you. People have tried to hurt me before and things didn't end so well for them. I do not need police.
I have found that if you are nice to police, they are assholes to you. If you are rude, they are assholes to you. If you are indifferent, they are assholes to you. It is too often that police officers are weak-willed individuals with fragile egos and short tempers. Not exactly the type of person you want roaming the streets with a gun 'protecting the citizens.'
I absolutely believe that police are a necessary evil in our society but the screening process for officers should be much more in depth and the training much more arduous. The police force should be trained like the military in my opinion. Filled with elite, intelligent individuals who truly believe in upholding the law. Not just people who know what to say during the interview to make it sound like they believe in their cause. The police, just like any other demographic, have good and bad within them. Of course I understand that.
Though I keep my opinions to myself I'm actually involved in a lot of volunteer work with my local PD and personally know many police officers. Most of them, honestly, are assholes. They couldn't give a shit less about the people they're supposed to protect and they have an 'us versus them' mentality. Not all of them, but the vast majority of officers I know think this way. It's honestly scary. I have a friend whose father is the captain of another precinct near by and though I would never admit this to my friend, the guy is the biggest douche bag I've ever met. He has arrogantly bragged to me and others about arresting people for marijuana possession, beating people up when they 'resist,' tasing people.... etc. He talks down about anyone who breaks the law, conveniently leaving out the fact that once when his son was arrested for some minor crime in college, he immediately called that town's PD and tried to get him out of trouble.
My opinion of police is not very high, but I help pay their salary, so it's my right to feel the way I do.

“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.
It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love.
Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll
