I can remember last year watching Trump's announcement speech and hearing him go on a racist rant, and thinking "Wow. This motherfucker's announced his campaign for presidency and managed to torpedo it before he even left the podium." And then he won the Republican nomination, and now he's won the presidency. And he only got worse, exhibiting rampant racism, sexism, and even political scientists compared him to Hitler and Mussolini and managed to do so with astonishingly little hyperbole. And we, as a nation, embraced it, and we took fascism further than it had ever gone in America since Fritz Kuhn spoke at Madison Square Garden in 1939. And it's not because of any sort of bigger message from his campaign, because, in the sixteen months since he started, he hasn't come up with anything in the way of a bigger message, besides "make America great," but given that virtually everything he put forward as a means to that end was transparently horrible, there's virtually nothing to recommend him. So we elected him President.
At this point, it's safe to say: We're all nihilists now.
