That's the equivalent of saying crime has been on the rise in the US and citing Chicago as evidence.

Actually it's worse than that. Sports, and maybe entertainment in general represent an interesting segment of the economic sphere. The value of the worker isn't a product of their skill and work output as much as it is a product of consumer tastes. As a counter point, NBA players are paid much more than WNBA players.
