Actually it's worse than that. Sports, and maybe entertainment in general represent an interesting segment of the economic sphere. The value of the worker isn't a product of their skill and work output as much as it is a product of consumer tastes. As a counter point, NBA players are paid much more than WNBA players.
NBA is more popular than wtf is WNBA again? Players get paid according to the revenue they bring in.
Men's tennis is also more popular than female tennis. Nobody cares about "women's sports" lol
And STILL male tennis players get paid less for MORE work.
