It's largely suspected that the reason Roof chose to defend himself was because his lawyers planned to use his mental health as a mitigating factor, and he didn't want them bringing up details of his life that he would find embarrassing. He very well may be mentally ill. Being found competent to stand trial does not mean he was mentally sound at the time of the murders.
So, the question becomes, are you willing to kill someone that may be mentally ill, or does that not quench your thirst for revenge?
