I'd much prefer him to simply be seperated from society, and efforts made to reform him (and criminals in general). Never released, but perhaps put to work within the prison system to contribute something useful. The thought of "leaving him to rot" for the rest of his life is equally as abhorrent to me as killing an offender. Criminals are still human beings, no matter what they've done.
