I have three at the moment; all of whom are mission critical in some way so they can charge into battle ahead of me as I fire arrow after arrow. Oh yeah, and one of them is a talking dog who once killed a dragon.
I somehow find that fact weird, but not the fact that I am a Khajit (i.e. a cat) that has a dog for a pet.
I can't do that with quest related followers because it kind of breaks the role play element for me. When someone is following me for a purpose, and they need me to take them somewhere, I can't go anywhere but the place they want me to go. Otherwise it fucks with my brain and every time I turn around to look at them it makes me think about what they should be doing instead of going off with me doing random shit.
I'd like to know if there are any work arounds where you can get multiple regular followers though (one's which you don't get for a quest). In Fallout 3 you could recruit all of the followers at the same time even though you weren't meant to due to a development oversight.
