Unsure about deconversion now.

Well, I made a post to the "atheist" subgroup here called "The Expression of Christianity."

In that post, I gave some of the principle reasons that I thought were valid for declaring myself an atheist.

However, several atheists here pilloried either the post itself or the conclusions.

In addition, I made the post to a couple other fora as well (not about religion at all), and atheists on those sites also pilloried it.

So I presume that my reasoning or my conclusions are somehow flawed. Therefore I must retract the idea I am an atheist, and move it to the "unsure" column, as many atheists do not seem to accept it.

In the meantime, I must go back and consider more what it is I meant to say in that post.

EH?

Which post Anymouse?? And why should anyone else's opinions affect how you wish to live your life and impact on your beliefs??

Confused now.
Ok found this:
http://atheistforums.org/thread-9385.html

And this also:

Anymouse Wrote:An atheist by definition only believes in things that can be known, and suspends belief in those that aren't until reasonable proof is put forth. In my mind an agnostic is an atheist who doesn't like the latter term.

And this:

PILLORIED
pilloried-past participle, past tense of pil·lo·ry (Verb)
Verb:
Put (someone) in the pillory.
Attack or ridicule publicly.

RE: Unsure about deconversion now.
Not sure which post you refer to. In any case, your reasons are your own, and it is your choice as to whether they need to withstand other's scrutiny.

I have my own reason for choosing my path, and while my reasons might stand up to rational inquiry, it is enough for me that I am satisfied with my conclueions, tentative they may be.

I question and doubt my own beliefs frequently, which occasionally leads me down a different path - but it is an individual path that must first and foremost be right for the one who takes it.

If you choose to make your beliefs and reasons for them know, there will always be those who will find fault.

Perhaps "pilloried" is too strong a word. Let's use "disagreed with" instead.

The post is here: http://atheistforums.org/thread-9958.html

RE: Unsure about deconversion now.
Then you're an atheist. There is no other requirement, but that you don't believe in gods. There isn't anything stating that you can't believe in ghosts, or something of the spiritual nature.

Then you are an atheist,period.

By definition, an atheist is simply a person who does not believe in gods. (From the Greek 'atheos' a=without theos=god) The statement is unequivocal; NOTHING ELSE IS IMPLIED OR MAY BE INFERRED. You are under no obligation to explain, justify or defend your lack of belief,to anyone..
Man is not so much a rational animal as a rationalising one.
