RE: Heroes of Atheism
No one led me into atheism, I found it myself. Well, then again I suppose my hero of atheism would be Wayne Grudem a fundamentalist Christian and the author of "Systematic Theology". It took only a couple chapters for him to point out quite clearly that the foundations of Christian doctrine are built on solid bullshit. Hey that's a great song, "On Christ the solid bullshit I stand all other ground is something else.". Anyway he destroyed my belief in in Christianity. Left me with no religion, only god.

Prosperity doctrine preachers (the list is too long to mention) also do a lot for atheism.

Then there are the other asshole preachers.

Then there are the asshole creationists, anti gay, anti abortion, anti separation of church and state....blah blah blah.

Then there are the general run of the mill assholes who use religion to be assholes to other people.

The Bible kind of sucks also.

Oh, and I'd like to pin a lot on god for his refusal to reveal himself in any provable manner but I guess I can't really do this.

Next in line would be many of the modern atheists that we all know and love.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise

It was The God Delusion that first got me to seriously question my faith, so I can't question Dawkins' status as a hero of the atheist community.

RE: Heroes of Atheism
I think one of the reasons Dawkins earned my utmost respect was the way he dismantled the popular opinion that religion should be immune to criticism and attack. If you can criticise someone's taste in music, art or film, why not their religion?

The Internet.
"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."

Doesn't really fit the description of 'hero'. Seen as a hero has to be a person.

But wait, my toaster is my hero for turning my bread into toast.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
