Do you trust people enough to not have any religion?

RE: Do you trust people enough to not have any religion?
It's very flawed to believe that religion and morality are two sides of the same coin. I think I'm pretty safe in assuming that none of us go out murdering people at weekends. The amunt of atrocities that have been carried out in the name of religion is horrifying.

Oh it wasn't about that, it was rather about those people who claim that without their religion they would be more immoral or those who operate under that mindset. As someone said earlier though people who do deconvert tend to go through a process anyway to where they don't become what they said they would.

I used to think, when I was a Christian, that I would be quite the bastard if I was an atheist.

You used to think that atheists were bastards, and then projected..lol.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I'd be more trusting of people if they didn't rely on religious morals and texts to guide their behaviors. Some, what, 80ish% of the prison population claims to be religious? Even going off of solely those statistics, I'd come to the conclusion that religion alone does not act as a moral and ethical guide anymore than Old Yeller does.

Not the other atheists necessarily, I was just one of those "Oh man I would be so wicked" people. Let's just say.... I have learned a lot in the past 6 months :p...

It is also true, all you atheists are bastards! FUCK ALL OF YOU ... and FUCK ME TOO.

This question reminds me of a South Park episode where there was no religion and since man is 'born to war' the scientists went to war over opposing beliefs. Some scientists today believe that war did not really exist on the level it does today until religion was invented. But lets face it...the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Sunni/Shia contraversy, the holocaust (and the long standing abuse of Jews) would not exist. Frankly, I believe it started with Akhenaten and archeologists believe he was intolerant of the other gods of Egypt and that could even be the start of Judaism. Of course none of this can be proven, but the intolerance of multiple gods is when war over God started. Jews being slaughtered by a tolerant Rome because they could not bend to Roman theology and all the way up the chain to Islam today. Hell, if Mormans had their way, they'd control the White House and we'd all be converted by sword!

P.S. A very "God-fearing, church going" landlord of mine ripped me off mightly out of alot of money through lies and deceit. A belief in God does not make a person moral. A moral person makes a person moral.

Do you have any links or books on that subject? It's something I said to my boyfriend, and it'd be nice to have something in text to back that up, even if it's not so much "this is fact," it's still better than "well that's just how I feel so pffft" lol
