Do you believe in Evolution?

RE: Do you believe in Evolution?
Genetically Tigers and Lions are so close that both species can breed and produce offspring. That offspring can be either a Liger (Male Lion breeds with a female tiger) or a Tigon (Male Tiger breeds with a female lion). The Liger, is a huge animal, currently the biggest cats in the world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liger

Tigons are basically the same but they don't grow as large as Ligers do.

The male Liger and Tigon is sterile and therefore Ligers and Tigons can't reproduce. Ligers also die sooner than Tigers or Lions probably due to their size.

This is where the standard definition of a species comes from. Any animal that can produce fertile offspring with another animal means that both animals are the same species.

The more complex definition is obviously a lot more confusing, as it deals with genetics etc.

Indeed, that is why Donkeys and Horses are not the same species. Male Mules are not fertile either. Hinnies are not fertile at all, male or female.

I know about the Tion and Lyger thing.

I didn't think of that though. Yes interesting. Its interesting that they're genetics are (supposedly) about the same difference apart as between us and chimps....

And yet they can interbreed.

Speaking of the ToE: National Geographic in the US will broadcast a series called Morphed about the massive transformations that occurred through Evolution this Sunday. These transformations include the dinosaurs to birds, land based mammals to whales, etc.

The trailer looked promising, unfortunately I am in a plane back home by the time it airs.

Sounds interesting, I'll look out for it on National Geo UK in the future (when I'm at home)
