Simple math problem could indicate your religious beliefs.

I spent ages justifying that I could figure out why £100 was wrong, but couldn't get the right answer myself, I thought my justification came together quite well

I got it, but instictively I thought it was 100. When I read 'This is a simple question,' however, it was obvious that the instinctive answer was going to be wrong. Then I got the right answer.

Very simple mathematics:
x = Cost of a ball. y = Cost of a bat. This gives us the following two equations: x + y = $110 (1) y = x + $100 (2) Substitute (2) into (1): x + (x + $100) = $110 So: 2x + $100 = $110 So: 2x = $10 So: x = $5
Did you actually do that? I just figured it out in my head.

I figured it out in my head too, but it's nice to present your working in an easily readable format so that other people can see why $10 is the wrong answer.

The problem is not with the working, but with the comprehension.
The question is worded so that you may wrongly assume that; x+y=$110 Once you make that "instinctual" leap, rather than correct comprehension of the question, you have yourself in a world of wrong answer trouble. Its a reading problem, not a maths one.

Because the instinctual answer is to allocate $100 to the ball, rather than $100+x.
I never said the instinctual answer makes mathematical sense. You're very mathematically minded, so the standard instinct for the answer probably didn't occur to you.
