Highly religious people are less motivated by compassion than are non-believers.

Atheists more compassionate than the highly religious.

As to why there needed to be a study on this, I don't know. After all, we're not the ones telling children that if they don't believe then they're going to hell.

Well thank God. I finally have an explanation for why I'm such a heartless bitch.
Wait WHAT WHAT?!?!? hock:
I'm so confused. I thought christians provided us with all our social conscience and kindness?? I thought they were our only gauge for measuring our own morality and without them we'd all start raping and killing eachother?? I thought christians were the only reason women don't get raped by missionaries and children don't get molested in churches ............... oh wait ........... nevermind.
I don't think compassion/lack of compassion is the same axis as theist/atheist. I think you can get theists who are compassionate, and theists who aren't, and the same goes for atheists. Same with intelligent/stupid - there are theists and atheists in both camps.
I happen to be a liberal, pluralist, tolerant theist, and I have far more in common with liberal, pluralist, tolerant atheists than I do with nut-nut religious types. I think the whole dividing line of this thread is wrong.
God point, colin but it is what we do here.
Give it some time. Some jesus or allah freak will say something terribly stupid and you'll know what i mean. It is between the highly religious and those that are either a little religious or none at all.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
